La Liga Spearheads Spanish League’s #BackToWin Restart Initiative Via ‘Applause To Infinity’

An initiative from Spain’s top two divisions – La Liga Santander and La Liga SmartBank – asks football fans to send applause ahead of the behind-closed-doors season re-start.

The rights-owner’s campaign aims to bring the sound of the fans back into the stadiums by applauding in the 20th minute of every LaLiga Santander & LaLiga SmartBank match played from the restart up until the end of the season.

The set-up is that as elite football returns after the easing of pandemic lockdowns, the league wasn’t supporter applause in the stadiums to act as a monument to everyone’s sacrifice and hard work during the Covid-19 lockdown months and viewers are urged to submit their own applause as appreciation.

As La Liga President Javier Tebas explained, ‘Applause To Infinity’ is an initiative to pay tribute to the heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic: health workers, law enforcement personnel, and all those who have continued to work during the lockdown.

“How will we do that with no fans in the stadiums? We’ve created a new website (Applause to infinity) where fans can upload applause to support their team,” said Tebas. “The applause will then be played in stadiums in the 20th minute of every game in tribute to our heroes so that we keep them in our hearts, and so players and fans not only in Spain but across the world can hear it.”

The call for applause appeal rolled out across the league’s social and dark social channels and is spearheaded by an online video asks for fans to upload their own personal applause to the initiative’s applausetoinfinity.com online hub.

The applause initiative is one strand of La Liga’s umbrella ‘Back To Win’ return programme as Spanish football gears up for a return to action on 11 June with a derby match between Sevilla and Real Betis. The game will be followed by fixtures every day for a week with other key early fixtures will see Barcelona will resume their defence of the Spanish title on 13 June away to Real Mallorca and Real Madrid will play at home to Valencia on 18 June.

All matches will be played behind closed doors.

Spain was one of the worst-affected countries by the Covid-19 pandemic which is still spreading death and havoc across the globe with, tragically, more than 30,000 recorded deaths.

The daily recorded death tolls have been significantly reduced in recent weeks and 1 June was the first day since the start of the coronavirus crisis in which the country didn’t record a single death and now football will return after a break of more than three months.

The season originally kicked off back in August 2019 when it was promoted by the property owner through a TikTok challenge (see case study) and by sponsor Orange and Google’s stunning AR stunt for the opening game between RC Celta and Real Madrid (see case study).
