Tom Brady & Rob Gronkowski Connect For Florida In T-Mobile’s ‘Banned’ Super Bowl Spot

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski connected successfully (yet again) in Super Bowl LV itself which was the prefect outcome for T-Mobile’s Big Game related marketing which was led by an amusing ad featuring the quarterback and tight end speaking on a video call in the previous offseason.

The minute-long ad, which was released online on the Friday ahead of the Super Bowl, shows Gronkowski standing on the tee of a Florida golf course whilsty urging Brady to retire. But, because of the poor service of the unnamed rival carrier, Brady hears Gronkowski tell him to “come to Florida and win another one.”

Gronkowski actually says. “If you retire now, you’re gonna be walking on soft sand in a week. Just come to Florida and feel the wind in your hair. Retirement is like winning another one. Maybe I’ll even join you.”

But, Brady hears: “If you retire now … you’re soft and weak,” Gronkowski supposedly says. “Just come to Florida and win another one. Maybe I’ll even join you.”

The narrative arc then fast forwards to a news conference in early 2020 when Brady signs with the Buccaneers and tells reporters he is focused on winning one more Super Bowl and that Gronk is coming with him.

T-Mobile ends the ad by referring to itself as “the GOAT of 5G.”

Comment:

According the telco’s PR on the spot’s pre-release, the ad was actually banned from Super Bowl LV because of the NFL’s protected rights deal with its official telecom sponsor Verizon,

And yet, despite the alleged ban, T-Mobile did run two ads during the Super Bowl.

Was it trying to get Verizon’s GOAT?.

Selecting this pair of athlete ambassadors might well prove to be spot on in terms of talent choice as during the game they broke the record for most NFL Playoff touchdowns and most Big Game touchdowns – moving past legendary San Francisco 49ers duo Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
