Specsavers ‘Test Experts’ Activates ECB Test Sponsorship With A Unique Look Into Cricketers’ Eyes

Fronted by a trio of England cricket stars, eye care brand and retailer Specasavers launched its England Cricket Board (ECB) sponsorship with an inventive, high definition photo shoot showcasing elite sport’s incredible hand-to-eye co-ordination.

Activating at the start of the Specsavers Test Series between England and India, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Stuart Broad fronted the ‘Test experts’ campaign by submitting themselves for ultra-high resolution photo-shoot of their eyes.

The Official Test Partner’s idea is based around the fact that playing international test cricket requires amazing hand-to-eye co-ordination and the creative, developed with CSM Sport & Entertainment, sees Specsavers unveil a detailed, never-before-seen look into the eyes of England’s test players.

Launched with a PR event, the Specsavers campaign came ahead of the opening of the test series against India: which starts on 1 August at Edgbaston and ends on 11 September at The Oval.

The brand invited the three players – all of whom have scored a century for England – to have their eyes photographed at close range and the resulting images offer a unique insight into the intricacy of the human eye.

The launch stunt was promoted via a PR push and across Specsavers digital and social platforms and also amplified by the players themselves.

After seeing the stunning results of the photoshoot Bairstow spoke about the importance of maintaining eye health and the impact on his career of his ability to see the ball well.

“Hand-to-eye co-ordination is one of the most important aspects of cricket and I’m lucky having good eyesight allows me to work hard on this aspect of my game while I’m either batting or keeping,” commented Bairstow.

“It is fantastic that Specsavers have joined as title sponsor for the upcoming Test series with India. They have been a great partner for English cricket and I hope the partnership encourages fans to maintain their own health with eye tests.”

This spearhead activation strand is the start of an activation approach that will sees Specsavers bring fans, players and the cricket community together with a series of different initiatives – all with the objective of using the partnership to promote pioneering eye care.

Other strands of the campaign will see Specsavers offer fans an opportunity to test their fielding skills for the chance to win Test tickets in the ‘Specsavers Fielding Test’ participatory experience at every ground, while an additional phase, called the Specsavers #Shouldve Test Series sees a mini video series explore the odd, eclectic and magical moments that have taken place during England Test matches.

This #Shouldve Test Series spot series will offer fans a chance to vote for their favourite moment and win the opportunity to win the Ultimate Specsavers Test Experience (with the winner scooping two tickets for the 5th Specsavers Test at the Kia Oval, London on Saturday 8th September).

Sport features heavily in Specsaver’s summer marketing from its sports themed, UK TV commercials,

to leveraging the FIFA World Cup

with most work carrying the brand’s familiar ‘Shoud’ve’ tagline’.

Specsavers teams up with the ECB for three test series summer: the first against the world’s top ranked test side India in the summer, followed in 2019 with a first-ever Test against Ireland and then the mich anticipated Specsavers Ashes Series.

Specasavers has been backing English cricket since 2014 and through 2016 it was a title sponsor of the County Championship.

The latest partnership reinforces Specsavers’ relationship as a long-term supporter of cricket after becoming the current title partner of the Specsavers County Championship in 2016 and Partner of the ECB Association of Cricket Officials (ACO) in 2014.
