KSI & Errea Launch Elemental Iceland National Team Kit Reveal Campaign Ahead Of Russia 2018

The Icelandic Football Association, along with kit manufacturer Errea, has revealed the new kit for the Icelandic men’s football team with a design and associated promotional campaign focusing on three elements: ice, water and fire.

Developed by Italian kit manufacturer Erreà Sport, the new strips for the KSÍ (the Football Association of Iceland) will be worn by the team for its history-making debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Launched in mid March, around three months before the tournament’s mid June kick-off, the three new kits have been inspired by nature’s elements: Iceland is, after all, a land covered with ice with the power of water and fire in the form of volcanoes and geysers.

The reveal campaign was spearheaded by a hero spot amplified across both the Iceland FA and kit supplier Errea’s digital and social channels including YouTube,

Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The main kit has blue as the main colour, with red and white design on the sleeves and around the neck.

The second kit is white, while the goalkeeper kit will be red, with both kits featuring the same design on the sleeves.

Guðni Bergsson, the President of the Icelandic Football Association commented on the kit: “We have waited for the kit a long time. I am sure that the kit will energize people and create a lot of debate.”

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland, was presented with the first kit. “It is a clean-cut style. A couple of weeks ago a teaser was presented where we saw dots. I was fearful then that the whole kit would be like that,” Guðni commented. He went further, stating “I know that Icelanders will come to like this kit. It is our jersey and both our men and women will do their best for country and nation. That is the main point.”

Comment:

Iceland will not only be the smallest nation at the 2018 World Cup, but the smallest nation eve to compete in the tournament.

Beating the previous record held by Trinidad and Tobago.

This tiny population will not just mean fervent support within the country, but will also help boost its underdog appeal to neutral fans.

Following the team’s strong showing at Euro 2016, there are plenty of brands leveraging the team, its fans and their famous thunder clap around Russia 2018 ranging from sponsors such as Icelandair (see case study) to FIFA partners such as Coca-Cola (see case study).

Italian kit manufacturer Errea, which has designed Iceland’s strips since 2002, handed the brief to Italian designer Filippo Affani who himself was inspired by Icelandic nature and worked to include fire and ice in the design.

The kit can be bought at www.errea.is, as well as local sportswear retailers in Iceland.
