Instagram Lens Lets Fans Boo The Commissioner During 2021 NFL Draft

Augmented reality helped maintain an NFL Draft tradition by enabling fans not at the event in person to boo Commissioner Roger Goodell during this year’s three-day live telecast.

The NFL teamed up with Chromasspring founder Grant Tucker and Instagram to keep the tradition going through an augmented reality lens which automatically boos when fans using it simply open their mouths.

The lens was available globally, and, according to the NFL, the most activity usage came from the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Germany and Canada.

“During a time when Covid-19 has made it so hard for fans to attend one of our largest events of the year, we felt it was important to allow them to be part of the action, even from their own living room,” said an NFL campaign statement.

The 2021 Draft, held from X to &, hosted only a limited number of fans in person due to the pandemic (and the whole 2020 NFL Draft was entirely virtual for the same reason).

If you feel you’ve seen this before, then you are right and look no further than NFL partner Bud Light’s Twitter #BooTheCommish Draft activation in April 2020.
