As the sport of surfing rides high on a post-Olympic wave following its debut at Tokyo 2020, California beer brand 805 Beer added professional surfer Conner Coffin to its athlete ambassador roster with placed him front and centre of a cinematic, black-and-white blockbuster of an ad called simply ‘805 Beer X Conner Coffin’
Posted across its digital and social channels on 8 September, the spot tells Coffin’s story of a Central Coast kid turned elite surfer.
Santa Barbara born Coffin is a suitable home grown brand ambassador for a beer brand brewed by Firestone Walker Brewing Co in Paso Robles (California) and positioned as part of the California lifestyle. Surfing at Rincon since kindergarten, he now competes with a small group of elite surfers from around the world for the WSA Pipeline world title.

While surfing is having something of a marketing moment – spurred on by a high-profile Olympic debut in Tokyo and stretching to its network TV run on ABC’s competition ‘The Ultimate Surfer’ show created by pro surf icon Kelly Slater – this is not the brand’s first foray into surf-related marketing. Earlier in 2021 it rolled out asocial short film called ‘Journey Into The Black And White of 805 Beer’.
