The series is hubbed on a bespoke Red Bull website at https://www.redbull.com/int-en/projects/red-bull-what-does-it-take-podcast and launched on podcast apps around the world (including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker and Google Podcasts) on 1 April with a new episodes dropping every Wednesday and is free to subscribe to.

Dandois, who in addition to being a multiple world champion, a social media phenomenon (with 228,000 Instagram followers, 231,000 on Facebook and 18,400 on Twitter) and an actor in a French romcom movie, is now trying his hand as an interviewer and media host.

He aims to offer something different from the usual journalist-athlete interviews by adopting an approach which draws on his own insider knowledge of the pro circuit and being on the other side of the microphone so often.

His interviewee for the first episode is Scottish pro trials rider and MTB pro Danny MacAskill: one of the world’s biggest YouTube stars who shot to superstardom with ‘Inspired Bicycles’ in 2016 which has notched up 37 million fans.

“The whole point of this podcast was to try and find out what it takes to become such a spectacular human being and incredible athlete, then inspire a new generation to do the same,” explains Matthias. “It is not just posting clips on Instagram,” Dandois said. “It takes dedication, blood, sweat and tears.”

Linked by the #WDIT hashtag across all social media channels, the podcast series is being promoted across both Red Bull’s platforms and Dandois own channels including Instagram and a bike trick filled video diary promo on his YouTube channel

Promotional content also encourages listener to leave comments, notes and/or ratings to create conversations around the podcasts.

‘What Does It Take’ is produced by ASI Media Events and Maniac Studios for Red Bull Media House.

Comment:

Red Bull is a brand about active lifestyles so it make perfect sense not to choose an experienced professional media personality or sports journalist to host its podcasts series and instead one of its lead athlete ambassadors who can provide an insider perspective on the lifestyle.

With growth of podcasts seemingly accelerating during the coronavirus lockdown, this launch is timely.

Podcast numbers have been growing fast: as of January 2020 Apple data shows it hosts 900,000 podcasts with 30 million episodes (up from 500,000 in June 2018).

And this rise is expected to accelerate further during the coronavirus lockdown.
