Gatorade Recreates ‘Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better’ Campaign In New Version With Abby Wambach and Usain Bolt

Launched on 15 March, Gatorade recreated its famous 1997  ‘Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better’ commercial with an updated, equality-themed spot featuring soccer star Abby Wambach challenging sprint legend Usain Bolt to promote Gatorade Zero.

The homage spot updates the original version starring basketball icon Michael Jordan and USWNT star Mia Hamm – both of whom make cameos in the new version.

The new ad sees the world’s fastest ever man compete against a football/soccer legend as the two sporting giants one-up one another and reach new fitness and performance levels outside their comfort zones.

The campaign, created by agency TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, seeks to highlight the equal capabilities of women and men in sports.

The aim behind the initiative is to urge viewers to ‘discover their inner competitor and get more from their workouts’ with Gatorade Zero with the claim that the product variant has all the electrolytes of Gatorade and zero sugar.

The marketing push also promotes the drink’s brand’s new ‘Gatorade Zero with Protein’ which has been developed to further kick-start the recovery process.

The campaign was created by a team at TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles which included Chief Creative Officer Renato Fernandez, Group Creative Director Mark Peters, Creative Director Doug Menezes, Copywriters Stew Tribe and Stephen Shocket, Art Director Dan Hales, Director Of Content Production Guia Iacomin and Senior Producer Kaitlin Moore.

Comment:

Like the Jordan and Hamm ad, the idea is that competition always pushes us to do better.

It’s not the first time Gatorade has remade a famous Jordan spot: in May 2020 it released a revised version of its famous ‘Be Like Mike’ ad to leverage spiking interest around the hoops legend due to ESPN’s ‘The Last Dance’.
