COVID Solutions: How To Fill An Empty Stadium? > FC Koln’s ‘Tifo’

When the Bundesliga returned with plenty of excitement but no fans, FC Koln ensured supporters continued to have a presence in its RheinEnergieStadion by creating a display from shirts and scarves provided by fans themselves.

For their home game against Mainz on 17 May, the team’s return after a two-month suspension caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Koln asked its supporters if they wanted to place any memorabilia in the stands.

The club then used the shirts, scarves and stuffed replicas of its goat mascot (Hennes) to create a show – known in Germany as a ‘tifo’ – amidst the empty seats.

Alongside a trio of photos of the tifo, FC Koln tweeted: “We asked #effzeh fans if they wanted to hand over their lucky scarf or kit to be placed in the stadium for the upcoming games. It’s not the same as you being there and it never will be, but thank you.”

This supporter replacement stunt followed on from Borussia Monchengladbach’s tactic of filling empty seats at their stadium by sticking photos of fans onto cardboard cut-outs.
