Arsenal Football Club Launches Official Chatbot With Automated ‘Robot’ Pires

Arsenal has followed in the footsteps of Premier League champions Manchester City with the late October launch of an official club chatbot that was fronted by offering supporters a chance to interact with an automated ‘Robot’ Pires.

Available across multiple platforms – including Facebook Messenger, Slack, Skype and Telegram – the club claims that the new chatbot offers fans ‘unique and personalised access’ to the club.

The chatbot, which responds to natural language requests, offers news, results, videos, player stats and ticketing information all via instant, real-time messages.

Arsenal worked with AI chat application platform GameOn to create the tool.

“We’re delighted to be working with Arsenal,” commented GameOn founder Alex Beckman.

“As the way fans engage with teams evolves, there are more exciting and dynamic ways we can craft chatbots. Chatbots are a great way for clubs to evolve their platforms for speaking to fans, and we’re excited to work with Arsenal to help bring shape to the category.”

Tom Hines, senior content manager for Arsenal, added: “We’re constantly looking at ways to bring fans content that makes their matchday experience even more entertaining.

“Working with GameOn to craft the bot is the next step in us developing a hub for fans that houses the answers to all of their questions – that feels intuitively part of the Arsenal voice and experience. Fans feel a personal connection to Arsenal, and AI is more important than ever for us to give fans a personalised experience.”

More and more sports properties are jumping on the chatbot trend.

For example, just last month the Invictus Games (currently taking place in Australia), also unveiled its first chatbot, called ‘Cobber, for fans and visitors – see https://www.invictusgames2018.org/the-games/mascot/meet-cobber/

While other recent notable sports marketing chatbot initiatives include Samsung’ Australian Team World Cup bot (see case study) and Mastercard’s Australian Open chatbot (see case study).
