Juan Mata Pledgtes 1% Of Salary To Common Goal In New, Multi-Platform Global CSR Initiative

Ahead of the new Premier League season Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata invites his fellow footballers to join him in Common Goal; a new movement which aims to get professional players to pledge 1% of their salaries to a fund that supports charities across the globe.

The initiative was launched with a spearhead spot, developed with agency Dark Horses, followed by a series of films with Mata – the first star to become a Common Goal member.

The launch video, ‘Juan Mata vs Eleven’, sees the Utd creative attacker and Spain midfielder ask his fellow footballers to form a ‘Starting XI’ of likeminded players.

The first spot in the series, which debuted on 4 August, explains the cause and comes complete with the copy:

‘It takes more than Juan to have a real impact. At Common Goal, we’re uniting the world of footballers behind a shared commitment to give back. The idea is simple. Players pledge a minimum of 1% of their wages to a collective fund. And we allocate this fund to football charities that create the greatest impact worldwide.’

The films aim to drive viewers online to the campaign’ss digital hub at www.common-goal.org
Working with Dark Horses, the film was shot by Jim Elson and, as well as running on YouTube, it was also amplified socially across platforms such as Twitter (by both organisation

“What we’re trying to do is define a shared social agenda for football,” explains Mata.

“Common Goal goes beyond individual brands and egos to deliver a greater impact. By making the pledge, we can form a lasting connection between football as a business and football as a tool for social change. One of the first lessons I learned in football is that it takes a team to win
a game”, recalls Mata. “We live by this mantra on the pitch, yet we rarely see it play out in the social impact space, which is dominated by individual initiatives. Through Common Goal we’re creating a collaborative way for football to give back to society. I urge my fellow players to get involved.”

“The aim of the campaign is to spark a conversation between footballers about the most effective way give back to the sport from which they have received so much,’ Dark Horses creative director Steve Munachen.

“Common Goal and Juan Mata are leading the conversation and their work should serve as an inspiration to all footballers across the world to work together to make a real difference”

Comment:

Common Goal was created by the organisation ‘streetfootballworld’: which supports a global network consisting of around 120 different football charities in 80 countries and reaching more than 2 million disadvantaged young people on a daily basis.
We admire the organisation and Mata and hope the initiative gets plenty of leverage, coverage and player support.

The early signs are positive and the initiative is generating plenty of media coverage.
