Vauxhall & Gallacher’s Catchy Chants Spearhead England Women’s #GetIN Euros Campaign

Top tier team sponsor Vauxhall Motors has teamed up with Sky Sports News presenter Kirsty Gallacher to pen a squad of soccer songs to encourage fans to get behind the England women’s football team at this summer’s UEFA Euro 2017.

Broadcaster Gallacher has been adopted as an honourary Lioness after creating a series of rousing fan chants for the England women’s football team as the leading edge part of Vauxhall Motors’ #GetIN campaign.

The initiative, developed with agency MaceSports, aims to rally fans to make some noise for the side as the England team heads off to play in the Netherlands.

As the lead official sponsor of the UK’s national football teams, Vauxhall Motors launched #GetIN to help fans to show team support, celebrate the spirit of football and give fans one off experiences and real #GetIN moments.

The new song book starts with a chant for the whole team – Roar For The Lionesses #GetIN – which was released on Vauxhall’s bespoke football digital hub following a launch event at Wembley.

At the launch, the Sky Sports presenter revealed which artist she would most love to have a chance to create a chant with, which celebrity friends would make her football team and who would win in a football match between BBC, BT and Sky Sports News.

The introductory campaign video urges fans to learn all the songs, shout them and support them and to visit http://www.vauxhallfootball.co.uk.

All the fun chants were filmed and recorded in Abbey Road studio for fans to listen to and are available on the car brand’s bespoke football hub at https://www.vauxhallfootball.co.uk/england/videos.

They are led by a chant for the whole team,

which includes the lines:

They are a team of champions
They are our national pride
They are a team of warriors
Watch our Lionesses stride.

Individual chants were also created by Gallacher for all England team members: including Karen Carney, Fran Kirby and Laura Bassett.

The process saw Vauxhall take each player back to their roots to capture a chant at a place which helped them during their journey to wearing their nation’s football shirt.

This, winger Karen Carney went back to her hometown Solihull where she began her football career at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre and her chant is:

Kaz Carney playin’ on the wing< Quick footed skill is her thing Makes us chant makes us sing Kaz Carney playin’ on the wing!

Fran Kirby returned to Caversham Park Primary – the school at which she discovered her love of the game

You better start early
To keep up with Kirby
A jinking run, a perfect pass
She’s a player of pure class!

While defender Laura Bassett revisited Bulkington Sports and Social – the ground where her career began:

Watch out Bassett’s about
Watch out Bassett’s about
Your attack will get caught out
Cos Bassett’s about!

Other tracks include ‘There’s No Stopping Steph’ for skipper Steph Houghton.

Each chant and video pairing comes complete with a mechanic to share the spot across Twitter and Facebook to spread the chant socially.

“We are all extremely proud of the England team and are hoping to witness something special this summer,” said Gallacher at the launch.

“It was a lot of fun putting the chants together, but I wanted to ensure that we did the Lionesses justice. Like all football chants they needed to be able to rouse a crowd and I hope that they help inspire the public to get behind the Lionesses this summer.”

“We wanted to do something that encourages the public to get behind the women’s team and we think Kirsty’s chants do just that” adds Cheryl Stibbs, Sponsorship Marketing Manager at Vauxhall Motors.

“A summer of football gives us a lot of reasons to make some noise and really support the team. Hopefully the team can give us lots of #GetIN moments for the fans to celebrate together. The women’s team are set to do better than ever and we’re supporting them every step of the way.”

Activative Comment:

An interesting tactical approach to encouraging a nation to get behind the national team at a major tournament.

Plus, with less nationwide familiarity with the players, this is also a way for fans to get to know players better and to encourage and nurture new terrace chants.

But we wonder whether there are simply too many chants for any single one to truly catch on and sweep across the nation.

Perhaps The FA’s own England Women’s team tournament initiative has a clearer and catchier musical approach with girl band Little Mix teaming up with the players for a new campaign to get the nation onside as England head over to the Netherlands

Little Mix show their support by saluting Mark Sampson’s side as they depart for the finals with a music video called ‘Salute The Lionesses’.

This campaign aims to encourage a s to join in by filming themselves saluting and then upload it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #Lionesses.

The best salutes will be featured on TheFA.com and winning entries will appear inside the Lionesses’ Euro 2017 training camp.
