Sky Sports ‘Festive Football’ Boosts Fan Excitement For Crowded Christmas Match Calendar

Christmas, according to the new Sky Sports marketing campaign, really is for football.

The broadcaster’s new festive season marketing push stars Chelsea and Belgium attacker Eden Hazard – arguably the league’s stand-out player of the first half of the season – wrapped up warm on a chilly, frosty training ground.

It then follows through with a montage of managers, players, Sky Sports commentators and analysts and fans all getting together ‘with those who matter most’.

The end line is, perhaps inevitably, ‘Christmas Is For Football’.

The objective of the campaign is simple: to highlights the huge array of live matches (40 games between 1 December and 3 January) available on Sky Sports’ channels throughout the holiday period.

The spot is running across Sky’s own channels and amplified via its digital and social platforms too.

The campaign was created for Sky Sports head of brand marketing Robbie Balfour, brand controller Martin Rogers, managing director Barney Francis and head of football Gary Hughes.

The work was created in collaboration with Sky Creative Agency and was led by agency creative directors Ed Mallin and Will McMullan.

The producer was Al McGee, the account lead was Nick Waddell and the senior account manager Alex Rodger.

The DOP was Tom Hole, the second unit was directed by Colin Thompson, the producer was Al McGee, with Ryan Woodland and Connor Duffy working on production.

The sound designer was Dave Williams with Envy Post and VFX was handled by Coffee & TV.

Comment:

Around this time of year, every year, the sports business world, the managers and the players debate the crazy Christmas schedules in the UK and argue that, like the rest of Europe, the British leagues should have a winter break.

But the fans love the festive fixtures.

And, with the exception of all the terrible new Xmas jumpers on the terraces and the awful pong of cheap new aftershave hanging in clouds over the terraces on Boxing Day, the Activative team loves them too.

And if the footballers think they have it hard over the festive season, just think of the NBA stars who actually have to play on Christmas Day itself.
